Most service business owners treat AI like magic. After 1,000 hours implementing AI as a CEO, I can tell you it’s not magic - it’s just another employee you’re failing to train.
I’ve spent tens of thousands of dollars building “innovative” AI tools for business that just collect dust. The problem isn’t the technology. It’s how we’re thinking about it.
Here are the 5 mistakes killing your AI investments:
Mistake #1: Building AI outside your workflow
You create a bot that answers product questions for salespeople. Sounds smart. But if they’re not already doing that in their normal process, it won’t get used. AI only works when it automates/speeds up what’s already working in your existing workflow.
Mistake #2: Automating entire processes at once
You try to replace your whole customer service operation with one AI. It’ll fail. Instead, break it down - use different AI for categorizing emails, different AI that drafts replies to urgent issues, different AI for standard questions. Small pieces win.
Mistake #3: Removing humans completely
Keep humans in the loop. AI should take a 30-minute task down to 1 minute of human review - not eliminate the human. Your people reviewing AI decisions beats AI working alone every time.
Mistake #4: Skipping the training
You wouldn’t hire someone and say “go reply to customer emails” without training. Same with AI. Spend time understanding where it screws up. Iterate your prompts. Give it proper instructions and only the reference materials it needs.
Mistake #5: Giving AI too much information
Dumping 13 textbooks on AI is like dumping them on a new employee. They lose context. They grab wrong answers. Less information & more focus = better results.
Bottom line: When starting out, think:
- AI augmentation not AI automation.
- Fix small pieces of your EXISTING process.
- Keep humans reviewing.
Which of these mistakes are you making right now?
